Days of our Lives hit a new ratings low for the week April 11-15, 2011 for live and same day viewings in the Women 18-49 Viewer demographic.
597,000 female viewers tuned into Days of our Lives during that week as watched:
·         Rafe’s doppelganger kill Fay Walker by smothering her with a pillow.
·         Ciara and Theo run away from home.
·         Carly descend into prescription drug addiction.
·         Melanie held at knifepoint on the pier.

17,000 more viewers (Women aged 18-49) tuned in the prior week when:
·         Fake Rafe tried to finish the job he started when he pushed Fay Walker down the stairs at the DiMera mansion.
·         Fay struggled to tell her daughter, Nicole, EJ’s secret
·         Taylor thought the secret was her and EJ’s secret attraction.
·         Sami struggled to stay married to (Fake) Rafe

And in the same week last year 145,000 more viewers in the reported demographic tuned into the happenings in Salem. 
If Oprah is correct and a study of the ratings of Days of our Lives and other daytime soap operas indicates she might be, the daytime drama may be a dying institution that is no longer financially viable on broadcast television.
Unless we all start tuning our sets to NBC weekdays at 1pm….
