Bryan Dattilo headed back to Days of our Lives to Reprise role of Lucas Horton

As speculated for months, Bryan Dattilo is headed back to Salem to portray Lucas Horton, the role he originated in 1992.

Datillo took a brief hiatus from the role of Lucas Horton (formerly Roberts) in 2001 (Lucas who was badly burned in a fire at the Kiriakis mansion was shipped off to rehab), returning in 2002 and staying until 2010, when Lucas was shipped off to China to work for Kate’s company Hearth and Home there.

Lucas came to Salem with his mother, Kate Roberts, after attending military school, and almost immediately joined forces with Sami Brady in keeping Carrie Brady (Sami’s half sister) and Austin Reed (Lucas’ half brother) apart, so that Sami could have Austin and Lucas could pursue a relationship with Carrie.  This quadrangle, and the Will’s paternity and subsequent custody battles  were the focus of most of Lucas’ history in Salem.

Soap Opera Digest is reporting that Bryan Dattilo has already been spotted at the Days of Our Lives NBC studios which means he has already started filming scenes and could be seen on our screens as early as February 2012 for sweeps month.

Lucas and Will

Rumor has it, Lucas will play a pivotal role in his son, Will’s coming out of the closet storyline.

Given that Will and his mother are currently at odds over Sami’s indiscretion (grief sex) with EJ when Sami and EJ thought Johnny was dead, Sami will not be the parent Will turns to for advice over his sexuality.

In fact, Sami’s recent behavior, if anything may have driven Will further into the closet.  Will’s reaction was to lead a life the opposite of Sami’s by looking to lead a moral life with then girlfriend, Gabi Hernandez.  But Will’s need for a secure relationship that others aspired and looked up resulted in Will wanting to move in with Gabi, a girlfriend he didn’t want to be intimate with.  The upshot?  Gabi chose to break up with Will rather than move in with him.

Since Will seems to be finding solace from the stresses of his life in the bottle, Lucas could also be of support should his son follow in his footsteps and develop a drinking problem.  It would be nice to see Maggie’s efforts as a sponsor for Lucas, and many others in Salem, bear fruit with one of them becoming a sponsor themselves!

Lucas and Sami
The return of Lucas will also be supported by LUMI fans, though it’s hard to imagine Lucas having anything but contempt for Sami’s most recent tryst with EJ (when the truth comes out – and it always does…).
Lucas’ relationship with Sami was destroyed twice, by Sami and EJ having sex.  Granted the first time, Sami was pretty much raped by EJ.  He wouldn’t help Sami save Lucas’ life (he was trapped under a beam in a cabin) unless Sami had sex with him first.  When Sami fell pregnant with the twins the paternity of the twins was in doubt with both EJ and Lucas being heralded the twin’s father at one time or another.  Of course, they were both the father’s.  Lucas fathered Ally, and EJ fathered Johnny.
The second time EJ and Sami “reunited” in the bedroom, Lucas walked in on them having just been released from prison on house arrest (with an ankle bracelet) for shooting EJ. This “coupling” resulted in EJ and Sami’s second child, Sydney being born, and ended the Sami and Lucas pairing.
Lucas and Kate
Lucas and his mother have always had a love/hate relationship.  The source of conflict in the mother son relationship has been Kate’s inability to stay out of her son’s love life.  Kate bought Lucas a wife  (Nicole) to improve his chances of gaining custody of Will, and continually meddled in his relationship with Sami, going so far as to bring back Sami’s former fiancé (and husband of three minutes) Brandon Walker, drugging them and putting them in a hotel bed together for Lucas to discover.
